What does RWA on XRPL mean?
Real-world assets (RWA) on the XRP Ledger explained: stablecoins like RLUSD, tokenized treasuries, and how issuers, KYC and compliance features work.
Real-world asset (RWA) tokens represent off-chain value — dollars, euros, government bonds, money-market funds, real estate or commodities — as tokens on a blockchain. The XRP Ledger is attractive for RWAs because it has a native DEX, low fees, fast settlement and built-in compliance features.
Main categories on XRPL
- Stablecoins – e.g. Ripple USD (RLUSD), plus USD/EUR tokens from regulated and legacy gateways. See our RWA tracker.
- Tokenized treasuries & funds – tokenized US Treasury / money-market products have been announced for the XRPL by issuers such as Ondo and OpenEden. These are often limited to KYC'd/qualified investors.
- Real estate & other assets – smaller projects tokenizing property, carbon credits or commodities.
Compliance features
- Authorized trustlines / RequireAuth – issuer must approve holders (KYC).
- Freeze & Clawback – regulated issuers can freeze or recover tokens when legally required.
- Domain verification – issuers link their account to a website via xrp-ledger.toml.
Risks
RWA tokens carry issuer/counterparty risk, depeg risk, regulatory risk, and fake copies. Always confirm the issuer address on the issuer's official website.
